Arthur M. Chu rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Panasonic TC-P50G10 is the best buy for this price tag! - The Panasonic TC-P50G10 delivers one of the best picture quality so far in the market. I've been searching for a TV for almost 2 years. Plasma is my first option, and I've looking the 2 brands : Samsung and Panasonic. Both deliver excellent picture quality. Then I found out Amazon was giving a very good deal: $200 off when you purchased G10 plus Panasonic BluRay player. I decided to go with it. 2 weeks later, both items were delivered.
First I tried with BluRay movie. The picture quality was astonishingly good! I use the THX mode. In that mode, the color is accurate, vivid, vibrant, and saturated. I also set the black level to "dark", so that the black level can really go deeper. With its THX mode (slightly lower the contrast), you don't need to do anything, just sit back and enjoy the beauty of the excellent, crispy sharp image! I tried different picture modes. Still the THX is my favorite one, although it does seem a little dark in the day time when sun is shining so bright. But that's no issue because I can shut the blinds off to reduce the sun light.
Then, I tried with TV (using an indoor atenna). Some channels are using the 720p, some are 1080i, and some are still standard NTSC definition. Still, the picture is sharp, and the color is also refreshing vivid, though it is no match with the BluRay movie.
All in all, I'm very satisfied with Panasonic TC-P50G10. It delivers the excellent color, picture quality, and perfect black level. You won't find any better picture with this price tag. Highly recommended!
Viktor Olukhov rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Another fantastic plasma from Panasonic - To be totally honest, my first intention was to buy Panasonic 50" 1080p professional display. For the last 2 years, I've been enjoying 40" 720p from PPDC (Panasonic Professional Display Company) and wanted an upgrade -both in terms of screen size and resolution.
Apparently, pro monitors/displays are no longer best kept secret in TVs, so they became very expensive.
I purchased TC-P50G10 from Amazon just couple of weeks ago and extremely happy with my choice. Picture quality & colors are just phenomenal!
Amazon and its freight forwarder (Pilot), as always, did a great job by shipping TV very quickly and delivering it to my apartment when it was convenient for me.
Stephen J. Fabula rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Too Good to be True - I purchased my Panasonic 50G10 on Jne 21st and have to say it is as good as any of the reviews. Everyone who sees it for the first time remark at the great colors and go on from their with praise after praise as they compare it to their LCD tvs. I got a real good deal at Sears with a price match and paid 1249.00 for it. If you are thinking of buying a big screen tv look no further.
RR rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Excellent product. Great value. Highly recommend. - We were debating between an LCD and Plasma and was leaning towards an LCD. After lots of research and talking to experts, I learnt that LCDs in showrooms look better because they are optimized better than Plasma. Further research led to concluding that Plasma was easily the better choice because of SIGNIFICANTLY higher contrast ratios, smoother transitions and high refresh rates. The colors look better, more real, the images are smoother and the overall experience is great.
Once I decided, Panasonic was the easier choice. I got this recommended by an expert and I am so thankful to him for that.
My pictures look great, the HD channels and movies look wonderful. The colors are rich, detailed and the videos are amazing. Picasa and Youtube and definitely a nice to have and work very well.
For the price and performance, there is nothing that comes remotely close. BUY It and you will not regret it!
C. Benson rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - What else can be said about this TV? - The picture quality of this television is superb. The anti-reflection coating on the plasma is outstanding. I have a very bright room with lots of glare, and it is rarely an issue despite the glossy screen. The reviews are right that THX mode is a bit on the dim side, but in a dark room it is more than bright enough. I find that I use the standard mode more often than the THX mode. VierraCast is a nice little gimmick, but not necessary at all. The sound quality from the actual television is atrocious, so don't plan on using it as a standalone unit; surround sound is a must! I am still very happy with this TV after 2 months.
P. M. rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - WOW - I read every one of the reviews here as well as CNET's and decided to buy this TV. I was partial to plasma after seeing my share of LCDs in bars, homes, stores and restaurants, and I find them (LCDs) to be too bright and the viewing angles aren't so great. IMHO, I just think plasmas look more realistic and since they've improved over the years, I was even more inclined to go plasma. I ordered the G10 on Monday and it was in my house and set up on Friday. I just moved up to this Panasonic plasma from my old JVC RPTV (which my neighbor now has). I got a great deal from Amazon which included free shipping and a BD player. I have the TV and BD hooked up to Directv with HD. The HD picture is nothing short of amazing. I don't see the problem with THX--it looks fine to me, even under indirect daylight. I don't like an overly bright picture (as you'll find in the "game" mode). I also have no problem with screen glare even though the TV faces the windows. I have yet to see a BD disc on this TV, and find it hard to believe that the picture can be better than just a regular DVD, which looks fantastic. Regular (non-HD) programming looks about as good as can be expected, but the purpose of this TV is for watching HD material, so I don't find that to be a problem. The sound is fine...I don't expect 10 watts per speaker to sound like a theater. I hooked up a pair of Altec Lansing PC speakers with subwoofer, and that helps expand the sound. I'm not one to sit home and endlessly watch TV or movies, so I don't need the whole home theater experience. Anyway, it's only been 1 day but I am very pleased with this TV. I can hardly wait to show it off to my friends and family!
sdgodfrey rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Love my new G10 - Awesome picture - I love my new TV. The picture quality is great. Movies on Blue ray look outstanding. Vieracast needs more work. Wish they would add Netflix.
Sound is a little week, but connecting it HT system works great. AVCHD on a SD card from my Canon HD camcorder never worked. It did not find any movies on the card.
Also wish the pictures on SD card could be resized to fit the screen.
I had my TV delivered to California using Pilot. Contrary to most users experience with Pilot shipping, they never did any anything other than to drop the box off. No unpacking or connecting to it to a stand, no nothing.
The TV was dropped on in living room and delivery guy gave me a form to sign. When I asked him if it was OK to check the TV before signing, he told me to go ahead and pulled the top off. I just checked the top part of the TV and then he was gone. It took them less 10 mins.
I had to haul the 50'' TV on to its stand. I guess not all delivery guys go the extra mile.
Paul O. Skoog rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Panasonic G10 Seies Plasma HDTV - I have watched and read numerous reviews over the years and finally made the plunge and I believe I made the best choice. This TV is awesome: lightwieght, easy to assemble, incredible picture and sound, and fairly easy to use remote and menu choices.
Adventure Fan rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Best Picture Quality For Price - Had this for three months so far. My affection for this tv keep growing. I sit 8' away, and use it for xbox360 and blu rays. Everything looks great. Blacks are deep, colors are rich, resolution is sharp. I have it on custom mode because I like it better than THX.
My sister has the X1, I think the G10 looks better, a lot blacker, sharper.
My friend has the S1, I think the G10 looks better, still blacker, sharper.
My wife's dad has the V10, I think the G10 looks identical.
To me the G10 is the sweet spot, best picture without paying extra $$$ for features I don't care about. And yes, I like plasma image quality better than lcd image quality, but I only play games and watch movies at night in a dark home theater.
Anyway, I just wanted to chip in in another 5-star review, because I love this tv. No buyers remorse here.
Jubal Leierer rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Love this TV! Best TV I have ever owned! - This TV is great. The only thing I did not like was about a week after I bought the TV Panasonic announced a rebate program but by this point I had already thrown away the box with the UPC. I really need a new digital camera. Lesson to be learned, next time I will remove the UPC no mater what.
Philip J. Truax rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Awesome TV - No thanks to Amazon - For the money, this is the best HDTV on the market in '09. Just don't order it here. I ordered mine through Amazon. The first time it was delivered, it had a large crack in the screen. The second time, there was a hole in the box and dent in the back of the TV. Needless to say, I cancelled my order and bought this TV from Best Buy - same price, and it wasn't broken. How about that?
Anyway, great picture, great motion, clear-bold colors. The blacks are unbeatable, and the THX feature is ridiculous. This TV blows any 52-inch LCD out of the water - lighted room or not.
Patrick Mcallister rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Shipping the Big TV's - Thanks Amazon,
Many companies talk about customer service but you deliver.
I ordered a Panasonic TC-P50G10 television on 6/11/09 and Amazon delivered it to the trucking company on the 18th.
Then bad things started to happen.
The trucking company "Ryder" left me a voice mail telling me to contact them. I called at 4pm their time, the same day, and got voice mail. I requested a return call. Nothing. On Friday the 19th I called again, at 4pm (having waited all day for the requested return call). I got voice mail again telling me office hours were 9-5pm... so they must be busy. I left another message.
No call back.
On Monday the 22nd, I called again and after a long conversation with the contact person, I was assured I would get a call the next day scheduling a delivery time.
No call. On Wednesday the 24th the manager called me and said "Because you did not actually schedule a delivery time, it is your fault the item did not make it onto the truck going to your area, and the earliest we will now deliver is sometime in July". My fault.
After a very long conversation, the Manager "Mike Bober" agreed it was probably not my fault and that they "might" have made a mistake but there was nothing he was willing to do about it, tough luck he said. (I asked for his supervisor's name and number, I called several times and always got voice mail and never a return call.)
So I called amazon. They graciously offered to refund the shipping charges. I wanted to think it over, there was plenty of time.
So, on Friday, June 26 I called Ryder again and was told, I could expect the TV sometime in early July. This was better.
The next day, Sunday, July 28th, the local BestBuy put the same television on sale for $152 less than I had paid 19 days earlier.
What would you do if you were me?
I called amazon and explained what was going on. The CSR apologized, he was reasonable and understood the dilemma I was in. He explained that if I killed the first order and re-ordered it was going to be the same shipping company who would deliver the next TV and would take weeks.
So, as a way to out of the problem, he offered me a 10% discount on the TV. It's not price matching, because I still do not have a TV. But it was smart and very customer friendly. And like I said before, lot's of companies talk about customer service but Amazon delivers.
And here is the problem. It is in the trucking companies best interest to keep items as long as possible in their warehouse. This way, the chances go way up that they will have more items to the deliver to the same neighborhood. Also, chances greatly increase that they could have a pickup in that same neighborhood. The point is, it is in the trucking companies best interest to deliver your package as slowly as possible.
So, if you know how the system works, you can avoid delays.
As soon as you are notified a trucking company has your item, call them until you talk to someone. Write down individual names and numbers. Your package will arrive quickly and in good condition if they know you are watching. And if there are any problems, Amazon will be there to help you out. I give Amazon ****

WhoDoctor rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Pretty darn impressive - I've owned the G10 50" for almost a month now. I bought it based on the CNET reviews and then after reading the reviews here. I did have some reservations based on the reviews (color and sound, specifically) so those are the items I'll address.
I'll start with the bad.
The delivery service was horrible. The delivery guy called me and asked, "Do you have a pickup truck?" My response, "Yes, why?" He said, "Can you meet me in such and such a town to pick it up? In this economy we're trying to save as much $ as we can!" I called the manager at the delivery office and relayed the conversation to her. She seemed a bit upset, to say the least, and my TV arrived 45 minutes later. That wasn't a great start.
Setting up the TV, however, was easy with a 2nd person. It was very easy. The TV stand is great, and makes the TV very sturdy.
Once turned on the TV had a funny hue to it, just like the reviews had said. It has that greenish hue like it was 'sick' or something. We changed all the settings as recommended by CNET and tried the THX as suggested by some reviewers. The picture was rather dim on THX, and the pictures on the settings recommended by CNET was pretty good. We then started looking at the other pre-set picture modes offered by the G10 and found "Game" mode to be incredible. The colors looked fantastic and the screen was bright. We've had it on this setting since then and the picture is wonderful.
We've found the sound on this TV to be acceptable. We have a 7.1 Mirage surround sound system powered by a big Onkyo receiver so we do LOVE sound. Unless we are watching a movie, we just used the sound from this TV. This is something that we couldn't do with our last TV, so that's been a nice surprise. If you are hoping for movie theater sound from this TV, its not it. If you're looking for sound that is great for a TV set, then you won't be disappointed.
Lastly, I was afraid of the infamous plasma "glare" that I kept reading about. I found the glare to not be an issue. We have a 14 foot wall of windows directly opposite the TV. The sun never shines directly into the window, and with the light colored curtains drawn, it just fine. There is no noticeable glare. I think this was our biggest relief. It was my wife's biggest relief too because she was able to keep her light tan curtains. I was ready to install black theater curtains if I had to.
In conclusion: The initial picture quality is strange unless you choose a different setting or create your own (which you can, easily), the TV design is very nice, there is little to no glare, and the sound is fine. The price on Amazon is great. All in all, this TV is a total winner.
Don't be afraid. I'm a pretty particular person and I don't tolerate poor quality. I'm very happy with this purchase.
Mr. Sam A. Pennington rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Blue Ribbon Purchase - I am really pleased with the quality, ease in set up, and picture quality and I got a very good price from Amazon..
J. Gonzalez rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Awesome picture quality for price!!! - I have had this tv for about a month now and can say a few things about it. As far as the look, i like how it doesnt feel cheap, nice design, and slim profile. Another thing to note is it has fans in the back, so the tv stays cool for a plasma. PIcture quality is excellent and accurate, i have to say however that the thx mode like everyone else is saying, is a bit dark. Viera cast is a cool new feature, defintely in development though, not much u can do with it yet. The colors on this tv loook very natural, all and all, i recommend anyone to buy this tv.
Antonio V. Almazzo rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Awesome quality - I just like my TV, I went through a very complex way to know what was the best Flat-tv for me and this panasonic meets all my needs.
ESNYC rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - I'm in Love - Ive had a Samsung plasma for years - that I love - and is still a great set.. but I needed another TV and wanted to go up to a 50". I did exhaustive research before deciding on this G10. I could not be happier. The picture is stunning. Gorgeous blacks, perfect color. Amazon's delivery went perfectly. And most of all - it was an incredible value.
G. Gay rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Great TV - Wonderful TV, outstanding picture, easy hook-up, only goofy part was the delivery service...we tracked the unit to our airport, it then sat in the warehouse for a week before we were called for a delivery appointment...then the truck was too big to get close to the house so the guys had to hand carry it.
Robert A. Mccracken rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Best TV of the year - For this price you can't get a better tv. You might not even find a better tv for more.
J. D. Stafford rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - What a picture! - I've been researching flat panel TVs for 3 years now and had run the gamut from LCDs to Panasonic plasmas and am I glad it took me so long to make up my mind! The Panasonic 50" G10 is one heck of a TV; beautiful to look at on my entertainment center and a fabulous picture...I don't even have HD set up on my UVerse account yet so I'm just looking at standard definition! Watched an HD movie on my Panasonic blue ray DVD player and it was breath-taking. The connections are easy to make, the manual is easy to understand (for me that's quite a statement!) and the remote is structured so that everything is obvious and handy. I just think that Panasonic made this TV very intuitive for the not-so-technical types like myself...I just LOVE it. The sound, as other reviews state, is not the best, but I've always used my home theater sound system no matter what TV I'm watching, as that sound will always be better.
The delivery service, PILOT FREIGHT SERVICES, was exceptional. The young men that came to install the TV set it up in no time and even went over some of the functions with me so, by the time they left, I was very comfortable about being able to work the TV on my own. They also get my undying gratitude as I had injured one of my hands using an electric hedge trimmer (you can imagine the results of that experience) the day before and could not move my behemoth of a Sony 32" Wega TV off the entertainment center before they arrived. That TV weighs almost as much as the new one, but is by no means as easy to maneuver and they moved it for me to its' new location with no complaints and smiles all around...major kudos to PILOT FREIGHT SERVICES! Amazon, you gotta keep these guys!
So, bottom line; this is one heck of a TV right out of the box, do NOT hesitate to buy it! Amazon offered a great price, free expedited delivery (it came before I was expecting it) and a fabulous delivery company...I could not be happier! Way to go Panasonic, Amazon and Pilot Freight Services...it's another home run! WooHoo!
Calvin Liang rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Awesome TV - Great life like visual. Doesnt get that hot in the back. Havent tried blu ray yet but the dvds on my xbox 360 hdmi look awesome. the sound does lack like reviewers say on here..but its nothing emergency like where you have to go buy a home theater set. it will do for the average elderly (not for me though currently shoppping for a set of home theater). controller is kinda cheapish but nothing to majorly complain about. Im very happy. with its specs and features for 50 inches at the price of $1550+ great deal.
Sean Griffith rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Great Picture - I work for Directv and get to see plasmas and lcds all day. This tv looks as good as anything out there. What a deal!
D. Adams rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Really Nice! - I bought my Panny through Amazon.com and received it quickly. The shipping Co. was great. I'd read others had problems, but I didn't. The TV is beautiful. I watched a vampire movie that was VERY dark and the blacks perfect. I have a Blu Ray player that looks beautiful w/ this TV. The extra features are OK (SD card access, internet access, etc.), I just don't use them much. I checked reviews on this TV before buying and they loved it and so do I.
M. Neace rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Everything Nice - Bought this back in April. It arrived 3 days after order. I could not believe it. My first HDTV but I've watched many from friends homes and sports bars. This is the best one I've ever seen. For a plasma, the glare reduction is the best ever, no one else comes close. I don't know how they did it.
Only problem, I can't stand watching my old 32 inch CRT tube in the bedroom. Gonna have to upgrade that one soon I suppose.
M. shekhawat rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Excellent Picture at Excellent Price - The images are crisp, clear and life like. The picture colors are vibrant, the sound quality is excellent. The set-up only took few minutes, and hookups were easy and clearly defind.
The TV arrived when promised and in excellent shape.
Tennis fan rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Unbelievable Picture! - I was late to the HD plasma party and now I can't believe I waited this long. Watching the French Open tennis tournament on this thing is almost as good as being there live. The picture quality is superb and the price was right. Highly recommended.
M. Ryczek rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Great TV, remarkable delivery!!!!! - I have to comment on the amazing delivery service provided by Amazon.
I ordered this TV Wednesday 5/27, in the afternoon. The delivery service, Pilot, called on Thursday 5/28, to set up a delivery date. I was watching the TV on Friday 5/29 by 2:00 PM. The delivery service was very professional, in that they unpacked the set, assembled the base, placed it in position, checked that all was working properly, and took out all the trash.
I still cannot comment very much about the TV, since I only have been watching it for a few hours. So far it is everything I expected and more.
Paul Ragan rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - First HDTV - This is my first HDTV, coming from a 26" Sony CRT. I must say that the set looks amazing, even compared to my father and friends' HDTVs. I think the colors and darks and details look great, especially watching blu-ray movies. HD cable is better than I thought it would be, while standard def is getting harder and harder to watch. My few minor cons are that THX mode does look pretty dark, I've mostly noticed it in some games. Also the speakers aren pretty mediocre; I'll be looking to get a surround sound system. I haven't noticed any phosphor trails in games or otherwise.
For the price and quality, I would highly recommend this to complete the visual element of a high definition theater system.
Amy R. Clayton rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Awsome TV!!! - I bought this tv for my new home. I am blown away!!!
HD dvd looks so clear so does blue ray. Games look so good.
P. D. Peters rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - This is the one... - Hopefully, I can save you some time. I spent about a year researching and continually trying to justify why my 50" Mitsu projection tv was still worthy. Last week, I finally pulled the trigger and this tv absolutely rocks. It is beyond amazing. I was watching a movie (X-MEN Final Stand)the other night (THX mode) and paused it twice and said to my wife, can you believe this tv is in our house?
I had my family over this weekend. Within 15 minutes my brother asked me how I knew this was the best tv to buy. I told him about the research I did, that combined with the picture he was looking at convinced him to order one for himself. He bought it yesterday.
The NBA playoffs, baseball, hockey, hey I even watched auto racing...Just unreal. I had no idea what I was missing until this tv arrived. I strongly considered the new LED LCD SAMSUNG'S. The 1.2" depth and picture are very good, but it came down to a few simple things. Overall value, absolute amazing picture, best refresh rate and viewing angles. All that and the brightness of LCD's helped me go with plasma and the right decision for me was the G10...This is the one.
We added the Bose 321 GS sound. We have a small room and did not want lots of wires, etc. Sound rocks. My wife's big deal was she wanted to be able to hear people talking in a movie and still hear the action all around. This system, though expensive delivers.
I hope this info helps. I appreciated all the feedback left by other's and wanted to share my thoughts too.
J. Osterman rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Wow! What a beautiful TV!! - I'd read all the reviews and from what everyone else was saying this was a great HDTV. And when you go to a store to look at all the TV's it really can be a little overwhelming. But when you get this TV home and plug it into your Blue-Ray... Holy Smokes! It's sweet. I was vacilating all over the place between various TV's but once I saw this in my living room I was very happy with my decision. I'm sure there's alot of other nice TV's out there as well, but one thing's for sure - they can't be much better, if at all. Besides, the price on this from Amazon was really impressive - the other TV's I think would compare with it were more expensive. So I feel this is maximum bang for the buck. I'm very Happy with this Panasonic TC-P50G10 TV and with Amazon as a vendor.
F. Hensley rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Great picture, amazing value - After searching for a suitable 1080p replacement for my older 720p Philips plasma, I first tried the massive Samsung PN-58B550 because it seemed like a great value, but--and since this isn't a review of that TV I won't go more into other than to say that for all I could do the colors were either flat or the blacks were grey and there was a constant buzz that is common with some plasmas that I just couldn't stomach for such an expensive and supposedly great device--given its shortcomings, I decided to have a second stab at a replacement. I selected the P50G10 for this and I must say that I am immensely pleased with that decision.
I first saw the P50G10 as a display at a local big blue electronics retailer and was instantly drawn to its look, even when powered off (and this is an important thing to me since most of the time that's how the TV is). I powered it on and was impressed at the dark blacks, vivid colors and smooth motion. As I compared it to one of the newest 1080p 240Hz LCDs hanging near it I realized that it was--even as mucked up as the controls had been--hands and feet above the other TV in terms of raw performance.
One feature I was certain I wanted in my next TV was network connectivity, whether for DLNA or straight internet feeds. The VieraCAST built into this TV is a little lacking in raw ability, but having YouTube, Picasa and weather close at hand is pretty handy; I'm hoping that the extra slot on the main screen that reads "coming soon" is filled with Netflix bringing Panasonic's offerings up to the LG & Vizio playing field. Fortunately, the TV is able to use this network connection to apply its updates without having to fiddle with USB drives and finding/downloading the right files... a huge time saver.
Many reviewers of this TV comment that the THX mode just makes the screen darker, and that is certainly one of the things it does, but in so doing the contrast is also popped to the max and a few other settings really make the colors more lifelike and vivid. I watched Wall-E as the first test of the new TV and I was amazed at how crisp and bright the colors were on THX mode; they looked great on standard and custom modes, but I felt that the specialized mode was the closest reproduction to when I saw the movie in DLP on the silver screen.
The only two complaints I have with the television are both relatively minor; first, it uses a non-standard power plug which was a bit of a pain for me as I like all of my cables neatly concealed on my TV stand and I've got enough cables running around that it's hard to add/remove them. Second--because my TV stand actually hangs the TV, I had to be very careful about the positioning of the brackets so I didn't block any of the necessary ports. Panasonic's having chose the 400mm mounting holes as a place to align video and audio connections proved a bit of a challenge and I ultimately had to mount the TV a little lower than I really wanted to be able to make the connections I needed.
Overall, I am incredibly impressed with this TV. While it would be great if it were a few inches larger, I have found that for all of its rich features (internet, THX, great color production, near-silent operation) this is the best TV I have found, and I'm sure I'll be happy with it for years to come.
P. laforgia rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - AWESOME TV - I like Plasma TV's much better than LCD TV's. To me LCD looks to bright. I love the dark black level's of Plasma TV's.The picture on this TV is awesome. Standard cable looks the same. But HD cable like ESPN looks awesome. Watching sports in HD is the way to go. I have the video settings configure like CNET settings custom settings. I use the THX setting when watching movies. DVD's looks great. But blu-ray movies look amazing. I have all the sound going through my Harmon Kardon receiver except when watching cable. The sound for this TV has no bass. When I go from watching a movie with the receiver to watching cable with the TV sound it is not good. But I am not looking for crazy sound when watching cable TV. But I would defiantly like more bass. This TV does not run to hot. I had the TV on for over 6 hours all the hot air is blown out the top vents in the back of the TV. No fan noise. No glare at all. I think the Panasonic Viera Cast is great. When more companies signup for this it will get even better. You can see this is the future of TV's. The following have signed up with Panasonic Viera Cast:Amazon on demand. To me you get much more with Netflix. If Panasonic and Netflix signup that would be awesome. But I will show you another way on how to get Netflix on your TV later. You get instant weather, which is cool. You can also set it to different locations. Maybe you are going to travel and you need the weather update for where you are going. Now you can get it right on your TV. Blomberg for stocks. Which I love. I check everyday just to go over the headlines for the day. I even check some stock symbols. You Tube. You can watch You Tube videos on your TV. I setup my account so I can have access to my You Tube videos on the TV. So if someone comes over and I want to show them my You Tube videos, I just have a couple of clicks to do and then they can see my videos on my TV. Sweet. Searching and typing on the remote is like typing on a cell phone. So if you text a lot on a cell phone using the remote is not that bad. Just slow. They also have support for Google Picasa. This service is great. I upload pictures from my computer to Google Picasa web album. Then from my TV through Vera cast I setup my account for Google Picasa. I can watch all my Pictures on the TV even in slid show. I love it. It brings all my pictures from my computer to my TV.
Let me share with you my setup: I use Linksys Powerline AV network kit (PLK300) as the bridge which works great. It uses the home electrical power lines to communicate. I have my wireless router upstairs with my PC. I have my Linksys Powerline adapter connected to that router. Downstairs I have the other Linksys 4port Powerline adapter connected to my TV and my Blu-ray player with a network cable. The Powerline adapter downstairs communicates with the Powerline adapter upstairs through the electrical wires form the house. Pretty cool. No wires to run. I have my laptop setup with a Wireless N wireless card. It gives me faster speeds and more wireless range then the embedded wireless on the laptop. I hook up the laptop to the pc port of the TV with a standard VGA cable and a cable for sound. I can watch instantly movies and TV episodes from Netflix. Streaming seems to work great with my setup. The Veracast works great with the Powerlines. So far no issues.
Bottom line I love this TV
N. Calhoun rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Perfect Picture, cool internet features - Out of the box, picture looks great. THX mode is a bit dark if there is a lot of ambient light. Easily hooks into Google Picasaweb albums. Great for PS3 games and blue-ray movies. So far its best tv I've seen for around $1700.
A. Lock rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - outstanding value, Amazon VOD is worth the price difference w/ the S1 - Everyone reviews the picture; we all know it looks almost as good as last year's Pioneer Elite. We all know it uses less power, produces exceptionally accurate color, and looks great in a bright room.
What very few people have touched on is the newly-added Amazon VOD feature. All it took was a quick firmware update from Viera Cast.
The video quality for HD videos is generally outstanding. I'd put it somewhere in between Comcast's compression and OTA HD. It seems to require somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-5mbit (inconsistent) downstream to maintain the blue-coded "HD" connection, so those with puny internet connections obviously need not apply.
That being said the videos buffer FAST, the prices are generally cheaper than cable on demand services by a dollar or two, and the selection is really pretty broad.
I've owned several HDTVs over the past 7 or so years, starting with the most basic 32" widescreen 1080i CRT ever made (a Samsung). The G10 is in a completely different league. The only thing that comes close are the 9G Kuro Elites, and good luck buying one of the few hundred of those that are left out in the world. With Pioneer exiting the game the torch has been officially passed.
My only regret is that I got anxious and pulled the trigger on a 50" before the 54" was released. I find myself lusting for that extra 4" every once in a while.
isidro garcia rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Best Value, Bar None. - For those undecided on which set to buy in the 46-52" size, look no further. I looked and researched for 2 months before I decided on this beauty. The picture is spot on right out of the box.I'm sure that some tweaking of the custom settings will help even further but I intend to allow a break-in period before I attempt that. I would say a $300 professional calibration is unnecessary on this particular HDTV. Invest in a midlevel Blu-Ray player with the dough(Panasonic's Bd60 is a solid choice). The audio is very adequate for regular viewing contrary to other reviews. For true home theatre nirvana though, a decent receiver that decodes HD audio is a must. When I finish my home theatre it will be very hard to leave home for the local cinema.
Feng Zhou rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Best picture quality and price combination - I bought the TC-P50G10 three weeks ago, and am very happy with it. I did a lot of research and tried out a number of TVs before settling down on this one, so I thought I would share some of the information and my experience with the TV, and hopefully make your decision in choosing the TV a bit easier.
First thing first. According to my research, the Panasonic G10 probably has the best picture quality among all TVs in mass production as of the time of this review (May, 2009). Most importantly it has pitch dark black level, scorching brightness, high color accuracy, and good motion processing.
I chose the Panasonic plasma over Sony and Samsung LCD for a few reasons. (1) Compared to 120Hz LCDs, Panasonic is significantly cheaper than Sony and Samsung. (2) I think the G10 is better in handling motion than the 120HZ LCDs. (3) The colors on the plasma are more appealing to me than those on the LCDs. (4) It has superior viewing angle. It looks perfect from any angle you will actually watch the TV without washing out the color, prserving the quality of the color.
The third point on color appeal is subjective and calls for description of subjective experience. There are lots of technical comparison of the colors on different displays on the internet, but my perceptual experience is that the colors on the panasonic plasma is very vibrant, punchy, tantalizing, and mesmerizing. The colors look like things in real life, but they are more intense than real life. A friend said "it's prettier than real, but not distorted. It is just like an enhanced colorful world." If you prefer high fedelity to real life colors, you can use the THX mode to tune it down to be very faithful to studio color measures. LCD in comparison is also very vibrant, but it doesn't look as realistic. It's more like computer graphics and less like colors of living things. Technically, this may have to do with the deeper black level on the plasma than the LCD.
Before the G10, I had the Panasonic Viera TH-46PZ80U 46-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV. Both TVs have very appealing colors, but I returned the PZ80U and got the G10 because the G10 has a number of important improvements over the PZ80U: it has a brighter plasma display, has a VGA PC input, lower energy consumption, and more accurate color. Also, its frame is more compact, so I can fit a 50" G10 into the space that would only hold a 46" PZ80U. In fact, the G10 is brighter and more contrasty than last year's top model Panasonic TH-50PZ850U 50-inch Viera 1080p Plasma HDTV.
What else do I like about the TV? It is very bright for a Plasam TV. According to tech specs and online reviews, it is the bightest plasma ever made. In Custom Mode, it is more than bright enough to watch in my room with direct sun light (sun light in the room not on the TV). In Vivid Mode, "you should prepare to put on your ski googles". In fact, it's too bright and overly constrasty and saturated for regular viewing. However, it is quite useful in displaying low resolution and low quality online video such as YouTube or Netflix Instant Watch. The extra boost in brightness, contrast, and saturation make the low quality online video look much more appealing and lively.
VieraCast is kinda cool. Not a deal maker but certainly not a drawback. I used third party firmware DD-WRT to set up a Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router as a wireless bridge. So the TV can get online without running a cable to my main router.
I find this TV fits my needs perfectly. But no TV is perfect, at least not for the technically savvy.
So here are the cons:
(1) The sound is mediocre. It is fine to watch a TV show, but lackluster to watch a good movie or music show.
(1.2) True Cinema 24-frame mode flickering is perceptually disturbing because the refresh rate is set to 48 Hz in the mode. It is a pitty because motion does look much more life like and less video like in True-Cinema mode. Wish the TV could run at 72 Hz.
(2) The VGA input for PC does not support 1080 HD. It only supports up to 1280x768. Panny should not cut corner here. Although this problem doesn't really matter for video contents because most computer video resolution is less than 1280x768. And the pixel interpolation effect on the Plasma is more like a CRT and less like an LCD. So the set is reasonably good at displaying contents with resolution lower than its native res.
(3) VieraCast needs improvement. The content is still limited. The search function of Youtube on VieraCast is not as easy to use as on a computer. The Amazon video on demand price is way too high (but this is not really Panny's problem). I wish a firmware upgrade would enables Netflix streaming.
(4) The remote is not as well laid out as the one on PZ80. The 3 big buttons above the directional keys are occupied by the rarely used VieraLink, VieraCast and VieraTool. The commonly used Menu key is moved to a small key. Totally wrong choice of ergonomics.
(5) VGA PC input is paired with RCA audio input. I wish it is a 3.5mm (1/8 ") mini jack instead, which will allow a single cable cable integrating VGA video and mini jack audio. Now I have to use two cables.
(6) The stand does not swivel.
Regardless of the above drawbacks, overall I find this TV to have the best picture quality and price combination. The pros by far outweigh the cons. The picture quality of this TV is truly amazing, as such some calls it "The New King of Plasma." Anyone seriously considering an HDTV should take a look at this one, now that the Pioneer Kuro exited the market. I use it with a PS3, the Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Entertainment System (Set of Six, Black), Denon AVR 589 receiver, and an Antennas Direct DB2 Multi Directional HDTV Antenna for HDTV over the air reception. It's a lot of fun to watch BD movies, play some games, and watch some TVS, stream some video on Netflix via my laptop.
I highly recommend it.
Ski Doc rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Outstanding plasma, great value - I've owned this TV for about a month, and have watched a variety of high def material on blu-ray and high def channels. Overall, I think this is an outstanding plasma TV and a great value. Black values are great. Image quality is crisp. Sports look great, no problems at all that I can see with scanning rates on sports/high speed action activity. The 3:2 pulldown for 24 frame per second film material works well. I've got a very large window right behind my viewing area, and the although there are some reflections on the glass, the anti-reflective coating is much better than my last TV, and as good as any I have seen. I also have my iMac connected with an HDMI cable (using a DVI to HDMI adapter) and the picture is outstanding. I'm able to watch high def video rentals from Netflix, Amazon, and iTunes.
The only negatives are:
Speakers point down and are a bit weak, but I use my surround sound system for all the audio, so not a big issue for me.
I agree with other reviews that the light output of the THX setting is too low. Perhaps in a perfectly dark screening room it would work. But in a typical viewing room, the THX images are not bright enough. However, I was able to achieve excellent color and better light output using the custom settings and am very pleased with the results.
Migo Wi rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Wonderful! - Purchased from Vann's through Amazon. Communication from Vann's was great and the shipping was fast. This is my first hdtv and I did much research prior to purchase.
I've had the tv for a few weeks and did a 120 hour "break in" on it. Some may not see this as necessary but I did it for good karma if nothing else. The karma itself worked; I originally had one dead sub-pixel (not uncommon when considering there are millions of sub-pixels). Of course, it was only noticeable on a completely white or green screen and from about 1 foot away. Otherwise, it wasn't noticeable. Anyhow, at some point in my break in period the issue was gone. It was likely a stuck pixel but it's no longer there. Either way, it wasn't noticeable from a normal viewing distance and something that I knew is a potential matter with plasmas.
Anyhow, HD content is superb; SD content depends on the source. THX mode, as many may say, is a bit dim but I feel is good in a completely dark room. Otherwise, I use the custom mode.
The sound is adequate but external receiver and speakers are probably necessary to get a true movie theater experience (which is probably what you want when spending so much money for a tv). I don't have a separate system yet, but that will be coming soon enough.
The Viera Cast feature is nice but limited. I expect more content in the next year or so. For now, it's just a "fun feature".
The SD card reader is also nice. It's easy to pop one in and run a slide show. The pictures look great, much better than viewing them on a laptop screen or digital picture frame.
My laptop connects via HDMI and it looks great. I don't use the tv as a monitor but have viewed pictures, movies, etc via the laptop connection and it works much better than expected. Many will say that LCDs are better for this purpose if that's your intention with the tv on occassion but I can't imagine much better than what this tv delivers.
I am really happy with the purchase and will continue to use Vann's in the future (purchased my camera from them last year and had similar positive experience which ultimately brought me back when looking at a new tv). Unless you are looking to spend $2k plus with minimal to gain for that kind of money, you likely won't find a better value than this tv. I'm still blown away every time I turn it on!
Jason Haas rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Phenomenal TV, great price - I've been holding out on the plasmas for a few years now, and they have only gotten better and cheaper in the last few years. This Panasonic p50G10 Plasma is no exception. The picture is sharp, response is snappy (no blurring), and the colors are in tune. I believe the only TV that can compete with this one is the Pioneer Elite. Also, the menus are easy to use and the remote control is one of the nicer ones I've seen. Some specifics:
- The inputs/outputs are all on the left side of the TV, which makes it easy to get to when swapping out cables.
- The Viera Cast feature is cute, definitely still a work in progress. The Amazon Video function is nice also and has potential.
- The Viera Link insta-synced up with my Samsung PD-1600 Blu-ray player which was nice, although the Panasonic remote doesn't have all of the buttons that you will need (title menu for example)
- There is also a function to sync up with Panasonic network cameras and use your wireless network for video streaming (haven't tried it but seems cool).
- I use the THX mode for movies, it's kind of a more mellow color pallet which is good for watching movies in the dark.
As far as price and shipping, I ordered it directly from Amazon for $1500 out the door with free shipping. The shipping estimate was about a week but it showed up in 2 days (!). Apparently it shipped from Seattle and ended up in Dulles, VA a day later.
I would highly recommend this TV to anyone who takes picture quality seriously but doesn't want to spend $5k for a Pioneer Elite. For the money, you can't beat this TV.
Shopper 397 rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Simply gorgeous! - This is my first HD set, although I have watched a lot of HDTV at friends' homes over the years.
The picture of this TV is simply amazing. The color in THX mode is truely mesmerizing (to borrow a perfectly apt description from a previous reviewer). It is so good that I try to use it most of the time unless the room is very bright (I have large windows on two walls in the room, so if it's sunny outside and the curtains are up, it gets too bright for THX mode). Yes, THX mode is dark, but if it's trying to reproduce the authentic colors of a movie, which you'd watch in a really dark movie theater, I don't have a problem with it not being suitable for a very brightly-lit room.
Speaking of the bright room, I have had no problems with glare. This is so much so that I don't know what people are talking about when complaining about plasma and glare. The anti-reflective coating on this screen seems to be very effective.
The first day I set up this TV, a friend and I watched parts of Live Free or Die Hard and Casino off of Dish Network in HD (1080i). We were both simply in awe of the picture quality and colors, and he is someone who is on his third plasma TV and has been riding the wave from the beginning. He thought this is the best picture quality (for non-blu-ray) and color he has seen on an HD set, period.
Upconverted DVDs look good, but Dish Network's HD 1080i movies look better. I can't wait to receive my Blu-ray player and try a real 1080p source. I will update my review then.
The delivery took place on the promised day. The guy unpacked the TV, installed it on its pedestal (with my help, since it requires two people) and we placed it on the table. Pretty impressive for free delivery. This "white glove" service costs $200 on top of delivery charges on other sites.
All in all, I am very impressed with this set and with Amazon's delivery. I would certainly recommend it and encourage buying it from Amazon.
Andy M rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Mesmerized - I received the 50 inch G10 about a weak ago. Setup was a simple procedure and I have been able to view the tv in a variety of lighting situations and video source formats. The set is in a brightly lit room (ambient) and I have utilized the THX setting as well as the custom settings outlined in CNET. I do get some glare but it is from a bay window directly opposite the tv and is resolved by shutting the curtains. The picture is bright enough (I use the custom setting during the day) and the noise complaints I have read on other posts is non-existent. In fact, the Comcast cable box is far louder. Heat build up is not an issue either. Speakers? I have been pleasantly surprised. There have been a couple of times where I had to look and see if the surround system was on (amp was off). Picture in HD, blue-ray is jaw dropping. My wife and I both comment on the quality of both the detail and color. This TV replaced a 7 year old Sony HD set (34" XBR) that failed and I am stunned how much the quality has improved and the costs have dropped in the intervening years [...].
Philip Greenspun rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - About 15 minutes from box to power-on - A neighbor and I (combined age close to 100) got this out of the box, screwed into its (included) stand, and onto a table in about 15 minutes. The TV itself weighs about 70 lbs. and is easy to handle.
The picture and sound are great, fed with a 1080i signal via HDMI from a Verizon FiOS set-top box.
The remote control could use some re-thinking. If you are fumbling with the remote in the dark, there is a switch to turn on the button backlight. The switch is right next to the Power button. The critical Mute button is the same size and shape as a couple dozen other buttons, many of which aren't very frequently used.
I like the fact that the TV comes with a pre-calibrated THX picture setting for movies. Calibrating a television with custom settings for accurate color rendition is not something that I want to spend hours doing.
Daniel Delena rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - P50G10 Delivers a quality HD experience with extras - The P50G10 is my second HD Plasma experience, the first being a 2004 Panasonic, which still looks and works quite well. It has found another spot in our home to make room for the new G10 in our family room. When searching for and finally selecting the new Panasonic G10, I was comparing choices against this first experience considering both the manufacturer and the plasma technology. While I have a few smaller sized LCD's, mostly in the 20-32" range, I have never been overly impressed with the picture. The seem a bit cartoonish, even in HD mode, so I quickly settled on a plasma as my technology choice. Having made that decision the alternatives in terms of manufacturers narrowed quickly. Wh Pioneer exiting the Plasma business, and considering my experience with my original Panasonic plasma the brand decision was made. Selecting which model from Panasonic boiled down to scouring the 2009 product announcements and available reviews (CNET), and making the trade-offs on size, cost and availability. This all led me to the P50G10, which was a good fit on all points.
I have had the unit installed and working for 4 weeks now, and must say its been an extremely satisfying time. The G10 is a major step up, from my previous plasma, in terms of picture, inputs i.e. 3 HDMI vs 1, and ability to control each picture setting independently. I have tweaked the picture setting on the Standard and THX settings a bit to sharpen and brighten the picture a bit, but most of the other settings are very good out of the box. As the unit is stand mounted, and in a room with mostly indirect and overhead lighting there are no issues with glare or light reflection, from the main glass or its glossy black bezel.
In the process I also moved up to a Panasonic BMP-BD60 (will write a separate review on it) Blu Ray player and the 1080P picture is nothing short of amazing. As these are both Panasonic units they inter-operate with VieraLink which simplifies and automates the way the two units operate together, a nice but not essential feature. I setup a Wireless ethernet bridge (Linksys WET54G) to feed the VieraCast function on the G10, and it works flawlessly. At this time the amount of content available is limited, but one can see the potential, if Panasonic can bring more content services to this function. The G10 does employ a set of power consumption controls. There are both Input Idle and In-Activity based auto-power off modes to save on power consumption, which is good as plasma's are a bit power hungry.
To be balanced the G10 does have a few shortcomings. The sound from the onboard speakers is a bit thin. You can mitigate this some by pumping up the Bass control and turning on the Bass Boost, but its just not a rich sound experience. I think Panasonic can do better with some higher quality speakers and a small sub-woofer. I, and I suspect most others, have a surround system connected and utilize it for a better sound experience.
I also preferred when Panasonic placed the additional inputs into a trap door on the front of the plasma, the G10 has these on the left (facing) edge. To me it was more convenient and accessible to have these set of inputs up-front.
All in all, the G10 is a high quality Plasma with terrific features and future expandability. If offers a near perfect picture across multiple inputs and types of content.
JD92694 rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - By far the best TV for the money - Beyond awesome picture. Blacks are so black and the colors are perfect. There is no reason to buy any other set. LCD's with LED backlight are the only ones even close and they cost several thousand more. The Vieracast works so easy. Just plug in a cat5 from your network and your all set. One touch of the remote and you have weather, Stocks, Youtube and more. If you buy anything else just remember you bought the wrong TV. THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT.
Edwin Pace rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Great TV - This TV is easy to start up, just plug in the various devices and the TV does the rest. It has a device connector which once you connect your devices it finds them. It has a great picture and it allows you to create a list of your favorite stations that you can retrive from the remote control, it is as if the manufactors were thinking of all the things a TV watcher would need to be comfortable and ready to experience full sound and picture. This TV has so many feature that are designed just for the watches taste. I like this TV a lot and will buy another soon.
Cabana Boy rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Amazing TV at an amazing price - This is an outstanding TV. Are there better TV's out there? Sure, but you'll end up paying multiple thousands of dollars for them for a negligible improvement over the P50G10. The picture on this television is simply amazing. Blu-rays really pop and high-def TV won't leave you disappointed. Standard definition is acceptable, and this TV does a great job rendering the picture, but it's a let down compared to a high-def picture.
The THX picture settings are a bit dark, but be assured the picture is still great. I've opted to set my unit to the custom settings as published on CNET. I find the picture to be a little brighter and still just as good as THX to the untrained eye.
I'm not too crazy about the remote. Some of the buttons are too closely space, which means you may accidently hit the wrong button sometimes. However, I'm using my cable DVR remote most of the time, so it's not a major annoyance. Hoping to upgrade to the Harmony One at Christmas so I can ditch the four remotes I have now (yikes!!!).
I can't really speak to the audio quality of the speakers. I'm running most of my sound through my HT system. I do have the audio/video from my Wii connected to the TV, and it is adequate considering the Wii is not an audio/video powerhouse.
Lastly, I have to brag a little, but I got my P50G10 for $999 along with a BD60k for $269. I was able to snag the TV and Blu-ray for cheaper than most places are selling just the TV. Also, it appears to me that the P50G15 is taking the place of the G10. The only difference between the two is about two inches of thickness, which doesn't really justify the extra $ in my book. Buy the G10 instead, you won't be disappointed.
J. Treu rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Glad I Waited... - The G10 is my first HDTV after waiting years for prices to come down and quality to improve. LCD picture quality never tempted me to pull the trigger on an HDTV. Too much blur during sports and movies for the price.
Delivery was outstanding. The first set that was ordered from Amazon was damaged and not deliverable. A new set was sent and delivered. Total time from order to delivery was a little over two weeks. The crew called ahead and worked well with my wife.
It took ten minutes to set-up the TV and scan for over the air digital signals. Wow! Glad that I started watching at night during prime time shows. Signal quality is the key with this TV. Standard programming is ok, but HD looks fantastic. Look up CNET settings or AV Science Forum for G10 settings. I used some break in slides at night during the first couple weeks and it seemed to improve the pop of the picture slightly. Overall, the G10 has enough settings for a novice to get a great picture.
Blue-ray looks amazing. As we have a two year old, we only find time to watch movies at night and THX looks fantastic...better then the theaters. I really don't think that you will find a better quality picture for the price of this television. Watch for specials...I got mine with a free blue-ray player.
One final note, our 50" G10 made little difference to our energy bill. The set runs fairly cool and you don't hear the fans. If energy consumption is a concern, it shouldn't be with this set. Most LCDs this size cost considerably more and the payback on energy savings is well over 10 years.
wokingfool rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - this TV rocks! - Ordered the TV and got it in 3 working days. it was delivered by Pilot in great condition. it was delivered 2 days early. I would not want to go with any other online place for big ticket items.
Picture: Great. Primary colors(black, red, blue, etc..) looked awesome. Secondary colors (green/yellow) looks a bit "radioactive". CNET described this minor problem in their review. but if you are not looking for this, then you probably would not see it. For the money, i don' have any grips.
Sound: ok, best to hook it up to home theater
Design: excellent. the silver on the bottom looks great.
Hooking up to receive signals: I did a bunch of research and decided to just get a HDTV indoor antenna. Chose a Radio Shack DA-5200, and picked up about 20 local digital channels(some are HD). The picture is clear and it only costs $60. Instead of paying $60/month for cable/dish, i can buy 3 blue ray discs/month. what a deal!
HD Picture: awesome. once you see this, you would not want to look at a regular tv. the HD channels look absolutely REAL.
L. Wong rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - The Top HDTV Dog - I have been reading reviews of all the HDTVs I can get a hold of on and off-line in search of the models with the most accurate picture quality. After the well-known Pioneer Kuros have been discontinued, Panasonic's top plasma sets have become the best available. The difference in picture quality between the extremely expensive Kuro set I've seen and the Panasonic sets, such as this inexpensive TC-P50G10, are very slight. You'd have to really be looking for trouble to see a slight difference.
When I connected my TC-P50G10, I hooked up my trusty old Oppo 980H universal player to it via the HDMI port then adjusted the picture settings using a calibration DVD. Although professional reviewers have stated that the most accurate picture quality is produced simply by activating the set's THX mode, I took this with a few grains of salt. According to one reviewer, the color temperature is the most accurate in this mode but you would have to set the color temperature setting to the "Warm 2" setting (this will ensure that the color temperature is even closer to the correct 6500K than the default THX setting). So that's what I did. I also adjusted each picture adjustment (contrast, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness) according to my calibration DVD's instructions in THX mode despite Panasonic's and reviewers' claims that this wasn't necessary because I know that each of the adjustments is actually affected by the specific DVD player connected to the set. Personally, I did not find the THX mode to be too dark, as some reviewers have noted. It is really the mode you want to activate if you want to watch movies under the ideal viewing conditions: dimmed backlighting and low room lighting.
The result was the best I've seen. As far as I can tell just by eye-balling, the picture was as good as I could hope for. Black level, contrast, color saturation was visibly perfect without the all-too-common "red-push" employed by virtually all other brands and models of TVs to make people look as if they had high fevers. And this was just with a couple of my personal DVDs. With Blu Ray the results often looked realistic enough to almost touch, especially with documentaries.
I'm definitely keeping the TC-50G10. It delivers state-of-the-art picture quality and beats the pulp out of all the LCD sets I've seen, including the much revered top-of-the-line Sony LCD sets. This Panasonic plasma set delivers all the goods without the LCD shortcomings of varying contrast at different viewing angles, blacks that are stretched into dark grays, and motion blur. It's ironic and amazing how plasma sets are losing marketshare to LCD sets despite LCD's glaring shortcomings. Marketing hype, consistently bad and obsolete dissemination of information by salespeople, peer pressure, and blind brand loyalty are definite factors in this phenomenon. Oh well, at least I have a good plasma before the plasma type goes belly up.
PattyO rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Very happy with my purchase - I got this TV a few weeks ago and I've had a great experience. I'm not using all of the bells & whistles with it yet, that time is coming soon. The main reason I bought it was for the picture quality. I did a ton of research and have the TV in a darker room and the picture is simply outstanding. THX mode for BlueRay is great, and right now I'm using the CNET settings for regular use.
I was really surpised that the SD quality is actually pretty good, I don't have to be a complete HDTV snob and still watch the non HD channels and have it still be worthwhile. Of course the HD channels are outstanding and completely suck you in.
I did get the deal with the blueray player, which was a great deal. Delivery by Pilot was great and came faster than planned. They set it up, let me look at it and make sure it works, took the box and left.
I'm very happy with this purchase!! It just seems like such a great value compared to LCD's, Plasma is where it's at now for what you get for your buck.
The remotes are pretty straight forward between the Pan blueray and TV and worked with eachother immediately which is nice. Both were programmable to the Comcast remote of course
I guess my only complaints would be the silver on the bottom of the TV (minor), and I still need to save up for a home theater to pair with this set.
4U2C rated the TCP50G10 as 5/5 and says - Overall Best Value. - I looked at Sony and Samsung but decided to buy this Panasonic because of value for my money. At $[...], it included a mail-in rebate to cover the cost of the Panasonic Blu Ray player. Sure, if money was no object just get the biggest and the best. There is no need for me to go into all the technical details or the pros and cons of this plasma as many reviewers have already done so. The picture quality is amazing; I set it on the THX mode. I used the factory default setting as it was optimized for the average eyesight and I am average. If your eye sight is a little more challenged, there are adequate adjustments to tone it up. Excellent TV for the $$$, very happy with this purchase and I highly recommend it.

Zatoichi rated the TCP50G10 as 4/5 and says - OMG, Amazon beat Newegg!!!! - Somehow Amazon beat Newegg's price w/ shipping and service. Heck, they even threw in Whiteglove service (delivery plus unpack and hook-up) for free. To top it all off, I got it 3 days earlier than expected.
I wish the TV's Viera cast could go to any webpage I wanted, like Netflix or Hulu. The remote has a light, but only illuminates the volume and channel buttons. These buttons are three times bigger than the others. I don't need a light for these, I need the backlight on all the other buttons that look and feel identical. Basically, they did all the hard work for the light and let some retards pick what to illuminate. Fortunately, the rest of the TV has much cleaner design.
I wish the PC input was for DVI instead of VGA, but I can get a DVI to HDMI cable instead.
Jeff P. rated the TCP50G10 as 4/5 and says - Great, but not all that - I bought this to replace a stolen Panny 50" 720p plasma that I was very happy with. This item cost about 1/3 more than the equivalent 720p replacement but the reviews convinced me to spring for a little extra. I'm not unhappy, but I'm not overwhelmed either. Picture is gorgeous, but so was the cheaper 720p version in my relatively small living room. I have to talk myself into thinking that this TV looks better than the stolen one. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I fail.
Biggest con: the sound is tinny and cheap sounding. If you have an external amp + speakers (I do), plan to use them routinely instead of just when you want to watch a movie. The TV that was stolen sounded so good that I occasionally had to look to see if the external amp was on or if I was listening to the internal speakers. If you DON'T have an external amp/speakers, factor buying some into your purchase price if you choose this item. You will find the audio quality almost too poor to watch the Weather Channel.
I really like this TV, but Panasonic cut serious corners in the audio department. And in a small space, 720p seems to be about as good as 1080p, even at the 50" screen size.
SONI rated the TCP50G10 as 4/5 and says - Great TV - I recently purchased Panasonic VIERA G10 Series TC-P50G10 50-Inch 1080p Plasma and I can't say how much happy I am with the purchase. Great TV with lots of extra features (Viera Link) in less than $1450. Bluray movies (1080p) look stunning. Little disappointment with standard definition TV (compare to my other plasma - Pioneer). Plug and play for internet connection. Easy to use Picasa web, youTube, Weather, Amazon On Demand etc. Overall great tv for the price.
BTW - I spent lots of time in reserach i.e. Plasma v/s LCD, Samsung v/s Sony but this TV beat all. Power consumption, black level and anti-reflection screen (usually features force people to buy LCD TVs instead of Plasmas) are way above the average compare to other plasma tvs including my favourite Pioneer plasma tv.
Overall - Excellent TV to have.
James M. Andrews rated the TCP50G10 as 4/5 and says - SPECtacular picture... for less - Gorgeous HDTV pictures are becoming commonplace, but this one has all the features I could want, including 3 HDMI inputs.
It requires some patience to setup properly, as some of the color settings induce migraines. It has a slower refresh rate than more expensive sets, but I have yet to see any motion artifacts watching NHL hockey.
This set was chosen as a replacement for my SONY projection LCD that developed color stability problems - JUST out of warranty.
The manufacturer's warranties are based on a depreciating scale, and aren't worth the paper apon which they are printed.
Good set, good value, DELIVERED TO MY DOOR!
Alex Scorpio rated the TCP50G10 as 4/5 and says - Good value - All the hype now sems to be about LCD's, but this plasma is a fantastic value at around $1,500. After lots of research I concluded that all LCDs still suffer from degradation when the viewing angle isn't straight on. So why are you going to spend $3-4,000 on the best Sony or Samsung when you can get this one? Anyway, the picture is great. The TV is a snap to set up. A couple of small complaints and one that keeps the review from being five stars: 1) The remote feels cheap and at times is not responsive in menu mode. 2) THX mode looks like it has too much contrast and is not bright enough. 3) Sound is really lacking on this TV - I have it in the bedrooom, where I don't want external speakers, and while I can live with tinny sound, I would have paid a little more for a decent speaker panel.
Redwolf rated the TCP50G10 as 4/5 and says - TC-P50G10 Exellent Choice and Value - Have had my P50G10 for several days now and could not be more pleased. The color is vibrant and awe inspiring. Prepare to gape. I looked at this Panasonic model and the Pioneer kura side by side and decided on the Panasonic for two reasons 1). Pioneer's expense, and 2). Pioneer getting out of the plasma tv business with no new models. I further saved a bundle by buying from Amazon. Best Buy was $300 more and that's not counting taxes,
I made my Panasonic Viera broadband ready and signed on for Amazon Video on Demand. The hook-up was relatively painless. I used a Linksys Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router Model WRT610N and a Linksys Wireless-N Ethernet Bridge with Dual-Band Model WET610N. The Ethernet bridge was used on the tv proper. This can be an expensive system if you do not already have an existing wireless network, but this worked beautifully for me and I am not an IT guy. I highly recommend this plasma tv, you will not be disappointed. If you are an audiophile, you're probably not going to be overly impressed with the sound, but it is fine for me.
Now a word about Amazon. I have ordered many items from them in the past and have been very pleased with the experience. There is one exception here. Their choice of shipping companies. They shipped my plasma via a company called, "CEVA" aka, "Eagle" Shipping. My experience with them was AWFUL! I was already apprehensive about ordering such an expensive and fragile instrument over the internet and, "CEVA" did little to diminish my anguish. They were totally numb and unresponsive to my inquiries, uncooperative, rude and late.
To add insult to injury, Amazon is aware of their short comings and choose to ignore it. Case(s) in point, see: http://www.amazon.com/eagle shipping. There, on Amazon"s own website, are myriad examples of unsatisfied customers with CEVA/Eagle. Why then do they elect to continue to use them? I am afraid I know the answer to that. Amazon does not let shoddy work interfere with a lucrative shipping contract. After all Amazon does not feel the pain and apparently are insensitive to ours. I would encourage you to find out who the shipper of your tv is and see what alternatives you have available to you.
Even the bad shipping experience has not diminished my choice of plasma tv's. This one is a keeper!
Morimoto rated the TCP50G10 as 4/5 and says - Great value, personally dissapointed moving up in size - This TV is replacing a 2003 42" Panasonic 720p HDTV Commercial Monitor (a 2001 model I think). I have always been happy with the picture on that set, except in its current location it is not bright enough during the day. I figured I might as well go a little bigger too.
The set is very good, but my wife said that she liked the picture on the previous TV better! This is because we sit too close to the set and we can now easily distinguish subtle imperfections in various video sources. My bad.
For example, native, studio-lit HD video content like The Today Show looks pristine, while a shot-on-film drama in HD starts to reveal film grain, but not in a good way. It is also very clear the difference in different qualities of HD camera equipment during local HD news. On the 42" set the picture was smaller so most of these differences were not so obvious. Everything looked great.
Also, just to make it clear - Professional HD video graphics (like lower thirds and animation etc during news) look absolutely perfect on this set just like the 42", as there is no camera quality issue in the image delivery. Only on camera shots is it so detailed you we suddenly get critical between sources.
This is not a criticism of this set, its just a reality when you get a larger set at the same distance - so beware - alot of people will tell you 'buy the biggest set you can afford' - I don't think that's necessarily good advice.
That said, this might make no difference whatsoever for folks who sit farther back from the set. But still, with all the improvements in HDTV since my old Panny came out, I was expecting to be at least a little blown away. I wasn't.
I also agree that 1080p is no big deal on a set this size or smaller. I watched a blu-ray of X-Men in both 1080p and 720p, and the difference was imperceptible to me.
If there is one exception, it might be HD games. I don't play a lot of console games, but I watched a demo of Ninja Gaiden and it was without question the most gorgeous rendering of a video game I have ever seen, no complaint there. Again there is no camera quality issue in the source material delivery.
The Vieracast thing is really of very little use to me. You can watch YouTube and Amazon video on it, but I have had that on my HD TiVo for a long time now. Besides that it has weather and stock quotes - whoopeedoo, like I needed another source for that. Picasa is well done, but I dont use Picasa I use Flickr.
Also, in YouTube, there is no indication whether you are watching the HQ or regular version of the video. Obviously, you always want to be watching the HQ version. There is no option to do this.
Whats really lame about the Vieracast is that there are 2 empty slots for Vieracast content saying 'coming soon' - they really needed to get these filled before release, it looks half-done. I recommend Flickr and Vimeo.
There are also two content slots taken up by Viera Concierge and THX mode (which is already available in picture settings) - these could be used by network features.
If Vieracast only had 2 features - uPNP and solid video format playback support (mpeg 1/2/3/4, AVCHD, DiVx, Quicktime, and AVI/Windows Media), plus maybe a USB storage jack, it would be 10x as practical as the (mostly) dumb stuff they currently have it filled with.
There is also a feature to be able to see your Panasonic internet camera on the TV. The TV says to 'refer to your cameras manual to enable the link mode' - I could not find this setting anywhere on my Panasonic camera's settings interface, and the TV could not find my camera. This may have been a subnet issue.
I was interested in the support for AVCHD playback from an SD card. I have a Canon HG10 which records in AVCHD. I put a few of its files on an SD card, along with a handful of other video formats (including MPEG2, which supposedly is also supported), and although the set could find the photos on the card but insisted there were not any videos on it :| Worthless. It shows photos fine but you cant zoom or stretch them.
The set does not read the quirky nonstandard '4GB SD' card I have, but seems to play well with any standard SD or SDHC card.
The set is pleasantly light for its size, although it has no handles and you really need two people to seat it in the non-rotating pedastal (one to hold it, one to line up the holes).
I have no issues with screen reflectivity, I am pleased with that.
Brightness during the day is also fine which was my major problem which needed solving.
The onscreen settings menu are snappy and easy to use.
Personally, I cannot use the THX picture setting, its just too dark (adjusting the brightness on the THX settings seemingly had no effect). The only setting that is really usable during the day is my custom setting, the 'vivid' setting being a bit overblown.
I wont comment on speakers as I pass-through to a receiver, and really don't have anything to compare them to as my last was a monitor w/o speakers. This set does NOT click when changing inputs, like my Onkyo AV receiver, which has very noisy switching, not only between sources, but even if an HD channel switches to an SD commercial.
So, after all that, I am not disappointed I got this set. I can watch TV during the day again, I now I have my old set in my bedroom, and a set with a lot more features (some greatly appreciated, some not), and a great picture, and at a great price. I will get used to the size.
However, if I had to do it again, I think I may have gone with a 46" 720p set and been just as happy.
Also - a note on shipping from Amazon - in 3 days from order I got a call to schedule the delivery in a 5-hour window the next day. The unit was delivered on time, the delivery man was polite, courteous, experienced, and professional. He unboxed the unit, assembled it on the pedestal, and helped me put it on my stand and plug it in. He then removed the packaging. Pretty good for free delivery of a 100 lb product.
-Update - I just noticed today that there are no digital audio inputs on this tv, so if you are using component cables instead of HDMI, this might be a problem.
Also, after 5 days I am totally used to the size and detail issues. Its a great set and I'm very happy with it.
UPDATE: I recently tested a Canon Vixia HFS10 HD Camcorder, which records AVC on HD. The Panasonic instantly recognized the native HD video recorded on the SD cards by the Canon and played them back flawlessly - now my favorite feature.
hurryfashion rated the TCP50G10 as 4/5 and says - Good value; great picture quality - I've been researching flat panel TV's for about a year now, and thru showroom viewing, friends' recommendations, online reviews (purchasers and experts), and Consumer Reports, I had narrowed my field down to Sony LCD Z- and XBR Series, Samsung LCD and plasma(550, 650, 750), and Panasonic plasma (PZ-800, PZ-850). The Sonys had great picture quality but were pricey. Samsung also had some good values but I just cannot get past the "Touch of Color" red accents on their mid and upper level TVs. [Call me traditional, but I think TV's look best in black or gray.] The Panasonic sets from last year didn't look quite as bright in the showrooms (Best Buy, ABC Warehouse, others) as the LCD's but I just liked the picture quality better--more vivid colors and deeper blacks, better motion handling. The power consumption issue was a bit of a concern, but Panasonic claims that their 2009 sets are more energy efficient. The new 2009 Panasonic G10 Series TVs struck just the right value balance for me--great bang for the buck. I've had mine for about two weeks now and I'm thrilled so far except for native sound quality; it's good, just not as exceptional as the vivid picture. Setup was easy, adjustments straightforward, and the manual is helpful. The remote could be better, as the VieraCast buttons have a needlessly prominent location on the relatively large remote. There are backlit buttons for Volume and Channel, but unfortunately the button to activate the backlighting is small and unlit. Small matter. Anyway, standard Cable, HD and DVD picture quality is really good and BluRay is nothing short of amazing. The SD Card viewer is cool, too. I'm not noticing any significant trouble with screen glare, even though my set's in a bright room; I was waayy overworried about that pre-purchase. Overall, I've been very happy with my Panasonic TC-P50G10 with no regrets.

Chedfred rated the TCP50G10 as 2/5 and says - Where's the Service? - Panasonic VIERA G10 Series TC-P50G10 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV
Got the TV 30 days ago and it works as expected but have a couple operational questions not clear in the manual so have been trying for over 2 weeks to get thru to Panasonic "Concierge" tech support - what a joke. Have sat on hold for several hours multiple times and they just ignore the calls and never answer the phone. Also have sent email questions that they first responded to a question I didn't ask and second time gave the wrong answer...now they just ignore the message and you don't get any response. Amazon is trying to get them to contact me but nothing so far. My bigger concern is if I need warranty service - thought I'd test that but customer service won't answer either.
Do NOT buy a Panasonic TV from any vendor until you try to call the service line first to see if you can even get someone to take your call.
"Concierge" service is 1-877-958-4372 or 1-800-973-4390. "Customer Service/Sales" is 1-800-973-4326 or 1-800-211-7262. Good Luck but I'd look at a Sony or Samsung if I had it to do over. I do not blame Amazon but once you own it, you are stuck with dealing with "No Service Panasonic".
Christian Williams rated the TCP50G10 as 2/5 and says - Product damaged. - After doing a month or so of research I decided to go with the Panasonic 50" G10 Plasma. I ordered from Amazon and the T.V. shipped from a company called Datavision. I received the T.V. just over a week later. It was delivered via UPS. When I opened the box I found the T.V. to be in terrible condition. The packing material was broken up, the screen was shattered, and the rear of the T.V. was dented in. I contacted Datavision to begin the return process. It took two phone calls to get a return order issued. The first person I spoke with said he submitted a return order but when I called back a couple of days later they stated there was no record of my first call. A few days after that FedEx was at my door and took the T.V. A week later I got my refund. I also contacted Amazon and they told me to call them back if I didn't have any luck dealing with Datavision. In the end I was left feeling that both Amazon and Datavision really did want to make sure I was taken care of. BTW, I think UPS is at fault here. It's my opinion that they aren't that careful with packages.

S. Alvi rated the TCP50G10 as 1/5 and says - Amazon price rip off - I recently bought the P50G10 @ $1500 in April from Amazon and soon amazon got the price down to $1350 in less than 2 months. The same set is at Best Buy for $1300 now. Amazon ripped me off and customer service does not stand buy to pay the difference. Be wary of Amazon electronic deals.
Cameron T. Paschall rated the TCP50G10 as 1/5 and says - SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH PANASONIC! - I have a 52" panasonic tv that is less then 2 years old resently it has just turned off all by itself and will not work unless it is unplugged for 15-30 min.s and then it just turns off again after less than and hour of it being turned on it, has been doing this for 2 weeks now, I called panasonic and they gave me the numbers of 2 service centers in my area, AFTER BEING ON HOLD WITH THEIR SERVICE LINE FOR NEARLY 2 HOURS (and if you live in an area where there are no service centers your basicly screwed), neither of which would answer their phones, my tv now will not turn on at all. It did not over heat it is not in the sun and there was no power surge to cause this. I have continued to call panasonic for their help but they have told me the tv is past the 1 year warranty and there are "limited" options right now. One of the service centers finnaly called me back and the MINNIMUM cost of repair for something like this is 400-500$$$ and he said he sees this all the time more than not with these tv's!!!!! Look around on-line flatscreen and plasmas are KNOWN for doing this and yet no one mentions this before you buy it!!! So if you plan on spending some money on a tv get the longest warranty that is offered because this will more than likely happen to you and panasonic does NOTHING to back their products or to help their customers!!!!! Buy a tv through a company that has a good warranty and has good customer service NOT PANASONIC!!!!
Paul Simonetti rated the TCP50G10 as 1/5 and says - Worst TV I Ever Bought!! Horrible Experience!! - Absolutely HORRIBLE experience - I will NEVER buy Panasonic again! Like everyone who spends this kind of money on a TV, I researched and researched forever before buying this P.O.S. It arrived on a Thurs afternoon and was dead by the next night! There I was watching the Yankee game and the TV just shut off. I thought it was some kind of fluke, so I went to turn it back on and nothing happened. Being brand new, I was still learning all of the features -- perhaps I had triggered some sort of timer or sleep mode? No. I scoured the manual (which, incidentally is worthless) and found nothing. I got on Panasonic's website and found nothing worthwhile. So I called the 1-800 # and had someone "troubleshoot" with me. It took them all of 2 minutes to get to the part where they said "there's nothing that can be done - we need to schedule a service call". I was irate that a brand new TV needed to be serviced, but after waiting so patiently for it to arrive, I didnt want to go through the arduous process of finding another TV. So attempted to schedule the repair on a TV that was barely 24 hours old -- they said it would be more than a week before the service tech could come out to look at it. I promptly called Amazon and scheduled a return - that has proven to be another nightmare. The pickup company (Pilot) had me wait at home from noon-5pm and never showed. When I called, they said they were running late and would be there by 6:30pm. At 6:20, I called again and was told the truck broke down and they would have to reschedule for the following day noon-5pm again. I told them I cannot continue to take 1/2 days off from work in the hopes of them arriving. After contacting Amazon, they arranged for a late afternoon pickup (after 4pm) the following day. I will certainly NEVER again order an item like this from Amazon - after all of the inconvenience and aggravation, I have received nothing more than a scripted "I certainly do apologize for any inconvenience".
Bottom line: the TV was good (GOOD, not great) while it worked but it died *1* day after I got it. I agonized over the decision between Samsung and Panasonic -- now I know I made the wrong choice. All of the reviews talked about pic quality and features - I never even considered reliability (or lack of, as it turns out).
D. Silvey rated the TCP50G10 as 1/5 and says - AMAZON HAS HORRIBLE CS ON TVs - Ordeed this G10 50 inch july 9 it took to july 21 to get to my house guy came in set it up on stand turned it on and all it did was buzz no picture. so he packed it up and took it back, i called amazon told them and they tell me i have to wait 3 to 5 weeks for a replacement to ship out. never again Dont buy this or any other large purchase from amazon I am contacting attorney generals office about this. and Amazon hides there bad reviews from people to see this should be right at the top since its july22 2009 ,people beware ordering online go to store if you can.
